GLOBAL FrieslandCampina Ingredients launches new whey ingredient to meet growing demand for premium organic infant milk formula June 2021

FrieslandCampina Ingredients has announced the introduction of Deminal® 90 Organic – a premium demineralised whey ingredient for the burgeoning organic infant formula market.

Manufactured locally in the Netherlands, Deminal® 90 Organic is a new organic version of the company’s long-standing, well-known demineralised whey product. As a component of infant milk formula, it enables manufacturers to achieve the ideal casein:whey ratio while also limiting mineral content. Deminal® 90 Organic is made of fresh milk from the company’s own select group of organic dairy farmers, who follow unique organic farming standards that go beyond legislation. This is achievable thanks to FrieslandCampina’s unique on-farm monitoring tools, which measure diverse criteria such as biodiversity and animal welfare.

The growth of the organic infant formula market over recent years has been spectacular. Research exclusive to FrieslandCampina Ingredients reveals that 3 in four parents now consider organic an important criterion when purchasing formula for their young children. In China, the figure exceeds 90%.[i] This explains Euromonitor’s prediction that the segment will grow by a CAGR of 15% in the next 5 years, reaching a value of €5.4 billion (US$6.42 billion) by 2025.[ii]

“The organic trend has been growing steadily for years and is now booming as more consumers than ever become aware of the impact their choices have on health, and on the environment. By introducing an organic variant of our Demineralised Whey 90 ingredient, we're responding to their needs and preferences when it comes to early life nutrition,” said Sophie Nicolas, Marketing Manager, Early Life Nutrition at FrieslandCampina Ingredients. “What makes Deminal® 90 Organic so special is the care we take over the process. From farm to factory, everything is handled right here in the Netherlands. Not only does this maximise traceability, but we also excel in organic standards, thanks to our unique monitoring tools which measure biodiversity and animal welfare on our organic farms. Plus, on a technical level, our ingredient offers low and stable mineral content and high microbiological standards, providing our customers with a unique new opportunity to strengthen or expand their organic offerings.”

FrieslandCampina has more than 40-year heritage in both organic farming and the production of demineralised whey. In 2020, the company invested in its locations at Bedum and Workum in the Netherlands, allowing for a certified and scalable production to meet growing consumer demand for organic products.

“We’re proud of how comprehensive our organic ingredient portfolio has now become,” added Sophie. “Deminal® 90 is the newest member of an organic family of products including Lactopure® Lactose Organic, Vivinal® GOS Organic and Hyvital® Whey EtD 100 Organic. Together, they cover core and functional components of infant milk formula, which means manufacturers now have more options than ever to enhance their organic positioning and brands in ways that truly resonate with today’s consumers.”
