CHINA March 2020
Chinese firm to supply pea protein to Beyond Meat
Shuangta Food has recently announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Junbang Commerce and Trade has signed a contract to supply 85% content pea protein to Beyond Meat with an initial order for 285 tonnes.
Shuangta Food, a world-leading producer of highly-purified pea protein, is a major supplier of this indispensable raw material for artificial meat manufacturers. It has been collaborating with China Meat Food Research Center since 2014 to study the application of pea protein and pea fiber in 'vegetable meat' products, and has developed such products including sausage, smoked sausage and smoked ham.
Its major US buyer, Beyond Meat is a large artificial meat producer, mainly producing vegetable meat made from soybean or pea protein with meat taste and texture. This is the first time that Beyond Meat directly purchased pea protein from Junbang Commerce and Trade, paving the way for more cooperation or possible partnership to sell into China's market.
Shuangta Food's operating revenue from pea protein have surpassed those from bean vermicelli and it is likely to see growing sales of pea protein due to growing popularity and applications of pea protein in alternative meat substitute and other products in both China and abroad.
The plant-based meat substitute market in China is still in its infancy however, there is a huge room for growth in the near future particularly in post-coronavirus period.
