INDONESIA October 2019
Food & Beverages in Indonesia must get Halal Certification by 17 October
A spokesperson from Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has confirmed that food and beverages products must have Halal certificates starting 17 October. This obligation is in line with the implementation of Law No. 33/2014 on Halal product assurance.
The 2 category of products are mandatory to have Halal certificates by the date issued, while others like cosmetics, services and meat storage will follow gradually.
The Ministry has completed the Ministerial Regulation Draft concerning the implementation of Halal products. The draft bill has been canvassed with related stakeholders, including the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI). The spokesperson added, “Even though it is still a draft, the ministry and the Halal Certification Agency (BPJPH) are ready to provide services related to the implementation of Halal products assurance on October 17.”
Indonesia Halal Product Assurance Law was passed in October 2014 and the law states that all products that enter, are circulated, and are traded in Indonesia must be certified Halal. The regulation also stipulated that it will be effectively implemented 5 years after its issuance. As such, 17 October 2019 is the official deadline. As to whether this law will be followed closely by date by all stakeholders is yet to be seen.
