San Miguel plans new brewery in Vietnam
San Miguel Brewery plans to invest in a new brewery in Vietnam with an annual production capacity of 2 million hectolitres in HCMC.
Presently, San Miguel has a very small capacity in Vietnam at only 200,000 hectolitres per year in a plant located quite far from its main consumer markets in HCMC or Saigon.
San Miguel Corp. President Ramon S. Ang said the plant will cost around US$70 million to build at an existing site where its first brewery, pig and feed mills are located.
In the past, San Miguel has also considered expansion through acquiring other breweries and it will continue to weigh this option in the future.
San Miguel Brewery's overseas business accounted for less than 10% of its total business as its concentration is still mostly in the Philippines. Apart from Vietnam, it also has existing operations in Malaysia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong and Indonesia.
In a separate development San Miguel is also considering a plan to build a US$100 million brewery in the US. In the Philippines, it seeks to fulfill the growing demand for beer by boosting the current capacity in its existing breweries. Roberto Huang, San Miguel Brewery’s President said, “By the end of this year, we will inaugurate our 6th brewery, located in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. By next year, the conversion of our Santa Rosa Bottling Plant in Laguna into a full-fledged brewery, will also be complete.”
San Miguel is also bringing to the market its newest beer offerings this year – San Miguel Flavored Beer Lychee and Anker Lychee.
San Miguel Brewery reported 14% growth in consolidated revenue in 2018 to Pesos 129.2 billion (US$2.53 billion). It sees Vietnam as a strong potential market, as the country’s per capita consumption of beer (44 litres) is more than double its home country, Philippines (19 litres).
