CAMBODIA June 2019
Cambodia satisfying its growing demand for meat through imports
In 2018, Cambodia produced 231,283 tonnes of meat, equivalent to 81% of its total domestic demand which totalled 285,432 tonnes.
According to the report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries report, Cambodia imported 630,776 live pigs, 3,981,303 live chickens and 2,440.7 tonnes of various meat and dairy products including pork, chicken, duck, quail, beef, buffalo, eat cakes and cheeses.
The Ministry spokesperson Srey Vuthy said that growing demand for food exacerbated by a decline in family livestock raising operations has forced the country to import more meat from foreign countries to fill in the supply lag. In the long term, the Ministry hopes to focus on promoting the domestic livestock industry with a goal of reducing reliance on imports.
Last year, Cambodia produced 86,772 tonnes of beef, 99,793 tonnes of pork and 44,718 tonnes of poultry.
With regards to imports, Vuthy said that ‘premium’ meat products usually came from Australia, South Korea and the US, while normal meat products are imported from neighbouring countries.
An average Cambodian consumes 17.6kg of meat per year with 5kg beef, 9.29kg pork, 3.3kg poultry and 0.01kg other meats.
