Zhejiang Buduo to open its 1st plant outside China in Malaysia
China’s food and beverage manufacturer and retailer, Zhejiang Boduo Holdings Group (Zhejiang Boduo), is eyeing to open its first manufacturing plant outside China in Malaysia to support its expansion in Southeast Asia.
Chairman Yu Tong said the company is keen to capitalise on Malaysia’s Halal industry to support the expansion of its products, comprising mainly of bubble tea, to other Muslim countries.
The decision to open a plant becomes a reality after it manages to secure a very good local partner, Loob Holding Sdn Bhd in 2018.
Yu said bubble tea has become a mainstream product in Malaysia and in neighboring markets, but there is no bubble tea ingredients manufacturer in the region, as such most of the ingredients were sourced from Taiwan and China. The joint-venture (JV) between Loob Holding, Zhejiang Boduo International Trade Co Ltd and Shanghai Panfei International Trade Co Ltd was to support Tealive, Malaysia’s homegrown bubble tea brand penetration into China market, with the target of opening 500 outlets within 3 years.
Tealive successfully opened its first outlet in Shanghai in November last year, its 3rd overseas market after Vietnam and Australia. There are currently 220 Tealive outlets in Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's rich natural resources such as tapioca and palm oil will be able to support Zhejiang Boduo’s manufacturing operations in Malaysia. Zhejiang Boduo produces ingredients such as tapioca pearl and non-dairy creamer, as such choosing Malaysia as its plant location will guarantee its supply as Malaysia is rich in both material sources.
